Welcome to my stop on the blog tour for writer duo Laura J. Burns and Melinda Metz’s latest thriller novel, I Do Not Trust You! Today we have an exclusive interview with the authors about I Do Not Trust You, which you won’t want to miss!
This is such an awesome novel featuring a global scavenger hunt, two teens dealing with mythical powers, and a whole bunch of clues and deception!
Memphis “M” Engle is stubborn, knows far too much of long lost languages and cultures, and is one of the two people on the planet who can translate an ancient language (she’s also great in a fight!)
Ashwin Sood is a little too posh for M, a member of an ancient cult (which she’s pretty sure counts for more than one strike against him), and has just informed Memphis that her deceased father isn’t actually dead and needs her help.
From the catacombs of Paris to lost temples in sacred forests, M and Ash search the globe for the pieces that might just free M’s father. But the closer they come to saving him—and the more they fall for one another—the closer they get to destroying the world.
I asked Laura and Melinda to talk a little about I Do Not Trust You, how they came up with it, what y’all should look forward too, and a little about the characters! Here’s what they said:
1. I Do Not Trust You sounds absolutely amazing–I love the idea of hunting for an ancient relic, and the main characters Ash and M travel to a lot of interesting places on their journey! How did you pick these locations and which one would you want to visit?
Thanks! We’ve always loved the idea of a treasure hunt–we blame it on our shared obsession with Raiders of the Lost Ark from way back in the day. Well, that and our shared obsession with ancient gods and goddesses. Just say the words “ancient relic” and we are IN! Our goal for M and Ash was to send them to as many different types of locations as we could, using varied mythologies as background. So basically, we researched the known ancient sites that matched our timeframe, and then picked the ones that gave us variety. We’d love to visit every single one! Laura actually did go to one recently, the Temple Church in London, and it was incredibly cool to see the things we’d written about. (Also, that London statue of the reclining Jeff Goldblum? We’d have used that as a sacred site if the timeframe worked out.)
2. Even though I Do Not Trust You has a lot of thrilling plot in it, it sounds like character dynamics still plays an equally important role. What aspect of your main characters’ relationship do you think readers will enjoy the most?
Everything we write starts with character. Before we do any plotting, we figure out who our main characters are, what they want, what they need, how they think. We knew we’d have a duo for this book, which meant we had to figure out not only who M and Ash were individually, but also how they would come together. They’re very different, but they share a sort of loneliness due to their family situations, and that allows them to find common ground. We hope readers will enjoy watching their relationship move from mistrust to loyalty.
3. This one is a tough one, but if you could pick either Ash or M to come to life and spend 24 hours with you, who would it be and what would you do with him/her?
We do love Ash, but M is our girl! We’d have to choose her, and we’d follow her wherever she wanted to go, because it would be guaranteed to be something new and exciting, with lots of interesting food!
I’d totally want to spend a day with M, too! If you want to spend a day with her (in the form of you + I Do Not Trust You snuggled up together for a few hours), check out more about this novel below!

Memphis “M” Engle is stubborn to a fault, graced with an almost absurd knowledge of long lost languages and cultures, and a heck of an opponent in a fight. In short: she’s awesome.
Ashwin Sood is a little too posh for her tastes, a member of an ancient cult (which she’s pretty sure counts for more than one strike against him), and has just informed Memphis that her father who she thought was dead isn’t and needs her help.
From the catacombs of Paris to lost temples in the sacred forests, together they crisscross the globe, searching for the pieces of the one thing that might save her father. But the closer they come to saving him—and the more they fall for one another—the closer they get to destroying the world.
