Cover Reveal & Giveaway: Spellhacker, M.K. England’s Genre-Bending Sophomore Novel ✨

Today I’m so excited to host the cover reveal for Spellhacker–the sophomore novel from one of my favorite authors, M.K. England!

Their debut The Disasters published last year and it was such a fun and queer space adventure full of high stakes and a loveable found family, I’m immensely excited to read their next book!

Spellhacker comes out on January 21st, 2020 and it features a genre-bending story full of tight friendships, heists, and conspiracies–in a world where magic–known as maz–is a resource.

I’m itching for it to be 2020 so I can pick it up, and here’s the official summary:

From the author of The Disasters, this genre-bending YA fantasy heist story is perfect for fans of Marie Lu and Amie Kaufman.

In Kyrkarta, magic—known as maz—was once a freely available natural resource. Then an earthquake released a magical plague, killing thousands and opening the door for a greedy corporation to make maz a commodity that’s tightly controlled—and, of course, outrageously expensive.

Which is why Diz and her three best friends run a highly lucrative, highly illegal maz siphoning gig on the side. Their next job is supposed to be their last heist ever.

But when their plan turns up a powerful new strain of maz that (literally) blows up in their faces, they’re driven to unravel a conspiracy at the very center of the spellplague—and possibly save the world.

No pressure.

Doesn’t it sound amazing? My quick summary didn’t do it any justice, but I’m sooo excited for this story and that mix of humor and high-stakes adventure that England is so good at.

Also, pro-tip, save your preorder receipts! A little birdie told me that you can get some cool stuff with them . . . so hold on!

Are you ready to see the cover now?

It’s honestly SO PRETTY. I know M.K. teased it on Twitter last week, and if you were subscribed to their newsletter you would have seen it on Friday, but I’m still shocked by it!

It’s got one of my favorite color combinations and such a fantastic look that feels like it fits Spellhacker. I keep staring at it and all its vibrant glory ahh!

I won’t make you wait any longer . . .

. . . so here it is!

“I’m thrilled to be able to share this stunning cover with y’all today! Genre-bending books are so hard to design for. How do you convey fantasy and sci-fi, technology and magic, snarky humor and life-or-death stakes, all in one cover? The magic in this book, maz, is thread-like, and combining that with the neon-style tubing is such a clever way to communicate the world of SPELLHACKER. I’m so pleased with what the designers at HarperTeen came up with, and I think they knocked it out of the park with this super eye-catching, text-centered layout. It really POPS, right?

This book is really close to my heart for a lot of reasons. The main character, Diz, shares way too much in common with teenage me. She’s not the most pleasant, to be honest. She doesn’t know how to have an emotion, much less what to do with it when she has one, and she’s chronically unable to process her own pain and emotional needs. Why can’t everyone just be a mind reader?? It would be so much easier. I also really appreciated the opportunity to write Diz’s love interest, a powerful, important character who shares my own non-binary identity.

The same casual background queerness, humor, and found-family themes from THE DISASTERS permeate the world of SPELLHACKER, illuminated against a backdrop of fast-paced adventure and high stakes. If you liked the feel of THE DISASTERS, I think you’ll like this one, too. It’s a little angrier, a little sharper, a little less shiny-happy, but I think it’ll still ultimately leave you with the same sort of hopeful feeling. And we could all use a little hope right now, right?”

M.K. England is an author and YA librarian who grew up on the Space Coast of Florida and now calls the mountains of Virginia home. When they’re not writing or librarianing, MK can be found drowning in fandom, rolling dice at the gaming table, digging in the garden, or feeding their video game addiction. They love Star Wars with a desperate, heedless passion. It’s best if you never speak of Sherlock Holmes in their presence. You’ll regret it.
