Ace Reading Recommendations from An Arm and A Meg! ♠️

I am very very excited to have one of my favorite people (Meg) guest posting on my blog today!

Not only did she recently start a blog about YA book covers, An Arm and A Meg (I crack up from the pun every time) so you should totally give her a follow, but I’ve known Meg for what feels like a while now, and she’s THE BEST.

I’m not going to bore you with stories but I think we first met on Wattpad in oh-god-um 2017? When I was first “on the Internet,” so to speak. And we’ve migrated through so many platforms I can’t even, but now we just scream on Twitter so YAY!

Anyways, back to the post! Even before the cover blog that you should totally check out because she’s doing a series on book covers in rainbow colors, I asked Meg to write a little something about some awesome books with asexual representation for this week, and this is what she came up with!

I think books with asexual characters are largely forgotten around this time of the year (aka Valentine’s day) because people have the misconception that ace = no romance? Which is so untrue gET OUT GOODbYE?

So I really wanted to dedicate some time on my blog to spotlight ace books, and what would be a better way than from an ace teen herself! Therefore, I present to you, Meg, one of my favorite human beings who sends me all the cat pics!

Ace Reading Recommendations from Meg! ♠️💜

There are like, no asexual or aromantic books out there. Because everybody knows that we were created by the United States government to overthrow the allos. I’m only mostly kidding. At any rate, some more rep would be LIT AF. Since I have too much of academic life, I’ve only read like 4 books with a rep of either, so this list is made up of both books I’ve read and books I want to read eventually when I have more time and/or money.

BOOKS I WANNA READ:

The Birds, the Bees, and You and Me by Olivia Hinebaugh

36192182

I actually didn’t realize this one had ace rep till they released the final cover and I messaged Olivia on Twitter. Apparently, (her favorite) side character is ace, which is amazing for a book about sex ed! Unfortunately, I can’t read it because it’s not out yet. But I’m saving my B&N gift cards for when it is.

Minor aside from Vicky: It came out on the 22nd, so it is out now and able to be purchased! Go, go, go, friends!

Hullmetal Girls by Emily Skrutskie

33382313

I almost bought this one but then I got WANT instead. I honestly had no idea that it even had SOME GOOD A** ace rep. Whoops. Not much more to say because I HAVE LITERALLY NEVER READ IT LOL.

Second aside from Vicky, also minor: You may have seen controversy about this book! There is a scene where a trans character is outed without consent because of the way that the world works and how the Scela are forcefully mind melded together. The author felt pressured to out herself on Twitter as ace, I believe, because of a controversy. So just be aware!

I would literally give my right foot for this book. Not kidding. Aro/Ace rep??? YES PLEASE.

Beneath the Citadel by Destiny Soria

I was too busy ogling that cover to notice the ace rep. Look at those drippy skulls. I know Vicky hates BillElis but I love his design works anyway. Sorry. ANyHOW. I’ve been informed that there are multiple ace characters which means this gets moved up on my concerningly long TBR.

THIRD ASIDE: Okay, my unpopular opinion is that publishers hire BillElis for too many projects and BillElis’ work (although very gorgeous and metal) is becoming passé and I want more POC on covers instead. Don’t @ me this is unpopular for a reason lol

BOOKS I HAVE READ:

There are two. Literally. I didn’t even finish SBB [Summer Bird Blue] because I had school.

Let’s Talk About Love by Claire Kann

ALICE. MY LOVE. I HAVE NOTHING TO SAY EXCEPT HOW MUCH I LOVED THIS BOOK. IT’S-A BIG ACE REP BOY.

I swear this is the last one: VERIFIED OMG THIS BOOK IS AWESOME I LOVED IT, MEG LOVES IT, READ IT!!!

Summer Bird Blue by Akemi Dawn Bowman

SOME MORE ARO/ACE REP. The story itself was really, really depressing. But hey. It was some damn good rep. 10/10 Megs recommend.

That was so wonderful ahhhhh omg! If you liked this post, make sure to check out Meg on her blog, An Arm and A Meg, or her Twitter @AnArmAndAMeg and let her know that you liked this!!!

(Also talk to her about commissioning art from her she is awesome it is verified by me!!!)

Tell me about ace books you love/are excited for!

I know I’m so so so ready for Rosiee Thor’s Tarnished Are the Stars ahhh!

  1. I’m definitely going to have to read Let’s Talk About Love at some point! My current favorite ace read is Sawkill Girls, though, because I think it’s the first time I haven’t read an ace character who’s the cool, logical member of the group, but is actually impulsive and lively and passionate. That meant a lot to read after encountering the same reserved, calculating ace in a few reads before.

    Great post!! 💜

    1. ooooh, yes! I love it a lot and oooh, I’ve heard a lot of good things about Sawkill Girls–I actually have it checked out, so I hope to dive into it soon! ❤

  2. Meg, thanks for the recommendations! I’m currently in the hunt for more asexual rep as well; why are they so hard to find, dang ittttt. I read Let’s Talk About Love recently, and I really loved it. Alice was such an amazing protagonist, indeed, and I felt her questionings pretty deeply. I was actually not aware Summer Bird Blue dealt with asexuality! I was going to read it nonetheless, but now I’m even more excited about it. Hopefully, the new releases you mentioned are amazing and bring more good ace rep 💜🖤

  4. I hate that I haven’t ready very many books with ace characters! The one I remember and love most is Our Bloody Pearl by D.N Bryn. I HIGHLY recommend you read that, Vicky. I think you’d love it! I need more people to fangirl with hehe

I have Summer Bird Blue on my kindle, yay! The Birds, the Bees, and You and Me has such a cute cover!

  5. Summer Bird Blue was SUCH a tear-jerker! I’m surprised you didn’t list The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy, though. (the main character is ace, and is an important secondary character in The Gentlemen’s Guide to Vice and Virtue.)

    1. there’s a lot of awesome ace books not highlighted–Lady’s Guide, Immoral Code, Beneath the Citadel, That’s Not What Happened, Before I Let Go, just to name a few! and I’m excited to read SBB!

  6. I’m so glad we’re getting a bunch of aro and/or ace characters lately, although there can always be more of course. One book not listed that I personally like a lot is Tash Hearts Tolstoy. 🙂
