Goal Setting or Wishful Thinking? My Goals for 2019

I’m normally not one for goals. Frankly, I’m not one for the whole “new year” concept either (except Chinese New Year, because then I get to eat lots of food).

But symbolically I realize how it could help people (still don’t really see why it’s a holiday, but I’ll take what I can get) set goals and refocus, which is what I’ll hopefully be doing in today’s post!

And, I guess it is kinda cool seeing a new year.

So I’ve got bookish goals and real life goals and writing goals and all sorts of goals. Some are big, some are small, but hopefully all give me something to look forward to!

Bookish Goals

I’ve got a lot of bookish goals to influence my reading, and I tried to keep them manageable as well, because I expect to be reading less this month! Let’s start with the obvious, and you can find more about specific reading challenges in 2019 here!

READ 120 BOOKS THIS YEAR.

I know for some people that seems a lot, but this is less than half of what I read in 2019 because I like to keep my goals manageable! And 10 books a month sounds pretty good to me! That would cover just the ARCs, not the backlist, so I’m pretty certain I can accomplish this!

READ 40-50% DIVERSE BOOKS & 10% #OWNVOICES.

Last year I only actually read around 28% diverse books, so this year I really want to bring that figure up and read more diverse novels! Which I hope will be feasible, especially given how much fewer books I’m reading this year.

READ 30 DEBUTS & 30 BACKLIST BOOKS.

I love supporting debuts, and I also love catching up on backlist books, so I hope I can do this! I read more than twice as many last year, so given my halved reading goal, this seems pretty doable!

Writing Goals

This is where some of my dreamier goals come in–I really want to make progress with my writing, even if it is only in private! So here are some of my goals!

FINISH MY CURRENT MYSTERY WIP & REVISE REVISE REVISE.

This is my biggest goal, but I really want to finish drafting my mystery work-in-progress and get to the revision process! It’s tough working on the final 30k because I have a whole laundry list of things I want to change, and it’s hard refraining from editing as I go. Ideally, I’ll have this done by March, but knowing me it’ll probably be late summer. And I have so many edits planned because this book is a hot mess gah.

DRAFT MY NEXT WIP IN FULL.

I’ve been doing some brainstorming and research in my down time, and I’m really excited for this one! If there’s one word I’d describe it with, it would be PINK. (And you know I love the color pink!) I’d love to get the first draft done by the end of the year. Maybe 30k in July NaNo and 50k in real NaNo? We shall see.

ENTER A PITCHING CONTEST OR MENTORSHIP PROGRAM.

This is my one huge writing goal of the year, and given the completion of Mystery WIP, I’d love to try and enter something. Just to test the waters out and get to experience what it’s like.

I’m not in it to win it, but I think it would be really cool to be able to try and see what it’s like entering in one of the competitions or mentorship programs! Especially if it means I get a little bit of feedback, too.

Real Life Goals

I mean, 2019 is a really big year for me. I graduate high school this year, will be starting college in the fall, and these are all huge life changes! So some of my real life goals:

GRADUATE HIGH SCHOOL.

This one seems kind of silly, but I’d still love to make sure I do it! Pretty sure the one thing standing in my way is my online physical education class that I basically have not touched in 6 months but need to finish to graduate. Oops. Someone yell at me to do this, please. I literally have one module to go.

ADAPT TO COLLEGE (ALSO, NOT GET RESCINDED).

Yay for college! I’m already committed to my dream college, but adapting is going to be crazy because I’ve never lived away from home before and it’s cold where I’m going. So fingers crossed that it’s not too hard to adjust to the lifestyle! I want to start some good habits while I’m there.

GET TO KNOW MY COLLEGE PEERS.

I mean, we currently have a groupchat for the early decision kids, but I’d really love to get to know them better! I’ve had the same friends since elementary school, and going to college is kind of like me testing to see if I can actually make friends without being stuck with them in all my classes for 10 years. These things are hard and it takes time and effort and I’d really like to genuinely get to know the people in my class!

Yup! So these are my 9 goals for 2019! They’re honestly not that big, but the writing goals are definitely going to be the toughest to accomplish! I hold hope and intend to achieve all of them, though, so fingers crossed and shoulders squared.

What are some of your goals for 2019?

  2. I’m very excited for 2019! Mainly because I’m graduating from college, haha. Going to college can be scary but I promise it’s very worth it! And I went to school 14 hours from my hometown, so it was a big adjustment.
I’m hoping to query my WIP and also enter some mentoring competitions. It’s scary but exciting! Good luck to you!

  4. Yes to Chinese New Year for those red envelopes too 😉 I love that you’re committing to reading 40-50% diverse books too. I definitely also want to make an effort to read more diversely. I’m super excited for you to start college! I’ve been loving it, and I feel like I’ve grown a lot from it too. I’ll be cheering for your WIP, your college experience, and all your books and blog posts ❤

  5. We seem to have very similar goals for 2019.
I don’t know where exactly you’re going to college, but you say it’s a lot colder than what you’re used to. My advice to you is as soon as you’re there, start looking for warm hats, gloves, coats, etc. What you have may not be sufficient if the place is truly cold. And if it’s a place that snows a lot and you have a car, get yourself some boots, a snow-shovel, and an ice scraper. Best of luck with all your 2019 goals!

    1. oh, yeah i’m going from FL to PA so it’s An Adjustment! and no car for me at this school (but maybe after I may need the snow shoveling equipment haha) thank you for all the advice!

  6. These are some great goals. I think you can totally get to them. 🙂

My GR goal is 150 this year. I scaled back from last year so I wouldn’t stress out so much because last year was a bit disappointing, even if I did make my goal (it was after I lowered it at mid-year so it still feels funny to me).

I want to comment more on the blogs I follow, so I’m trying to keep up with that. It helps that I get the email notifications, though some mornings are a bit overwhelming. Y’all are so busy! 😀

    1. thank you! and oooh omg I wish you all the luck harker–although you won’t need it with your GR goal!

and yes! i’m horrid (absolutely horrible) at commenting on blogs because I’m very much sequestered (and scarred from the horrible site wattpad gah) but i’d love to branch out a bit!

      1. yeah….I can rant about this for days, but the books that make it out there with wattpad’s help (not things like Lillie vale’s small town hearts, which she got published herself) are a bit meh in the trad pub landscape. but yes! thank you!

  7. Great goals, Vicky! Wishing you luck on all of them 💞 And yay – we’re both the class of ’19 – I’m also graduating high school and starting college this year! Ahh I’m excited & nervous at the same time. I’m excited for a fresh start in college, but nervous since it is such a drastic change, haha. I hope that our college experiences will be great. And congrats again on getting accepted to your dream college! ☺️

  9. These are some great goals! I entered pitch wars & was selected this year, and I can’t recommend it highly enough. It has been an amazing experience so far, so if you’re looking for a contest to enter, definitely consider it. I’ve heard good things about Author Mentor Match, too, but my heart obviously beats for pitchwars. <33
Also, feel free to reach out if you have any questions about the pitch wars process or other mentorship contests. I'm always happy to talk pitch wars. (:

    1. oh my gosh, that’s awesome, congrats!!! I’m actually thinking of entering the teen version (TeenPit) this march in my last few months as a teen, so fingers crossed!

      1. That’s awesome – let me know if you want another set of eyes on your submission package (I’m assuming there’s a query/excerpt like there is for pitchwars). Also, one of the mentees this year is a high school senior & she is BRILLIANT. So of course do what’s best for you, but I think you’d have a good shot at pitchwars too, if you want to enter both. (:

      2. yes! and that’s awesome–i’m definitely going to consider entering in the future!!! thank you again, Mary! ❤

  10. I relate to quite a lot of your life goals, Vicky! I graduated from high school last year, and in my country, it means I’ll be signing to college in early 2019. I only have one college entrance exam left (which is on Sunday and I’m absolutely terrified), and by February, I’ll have all results. It’s scary to think that in a couple months, my life will be completely different. I’ll be in a new environment, with new teachers, new classmates and new classes. I also hope to get to know my college peers better. I feel like I’m terrible at making new friends – I never know what to say, and I’m a total introvert -, so I’ll do my best to reach out for people this year and put on some effort in getting to know them well.
Hope you get to achieve all your goals for the new year! 💛

and yes! that’s exactly what i’m feeling. i’m scared and a little excited and have all my fingers crossed ahahahah. and thank you! I hope you achieve your goals as well!

  11. Good luck on all your goals, Vicky! I hope you have a fun year at college ❤ And aahh I'm glad you're trying to read more diversely! I'm actually really happy by the percentage of diverse books I read in 2018 (90%+ lmao, but I definitely don't read as many books as you do!) so I hope I can keep it up! And good luck on all your WIP stuff, Vicky!! Writing a mystery seems so hard 😂

    1. thank you so much!!! and omg that is so admirable 90%+ is such a great number!!! and I never thought I would write a mystery it is my *second least* favorite genre so we will see how it goes ahahaa
