Best of 2018: Favorite Sequels from 2018

To end 2018, every Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday left in the year will be dedicated to a list of 6 books that absolutely wowed me this year.

Today’s post is all about sequels–whether they’re series enders or just a middle book in the journey! I’ve seen so many amazing series conclude this year, but I’ve also seen a bunch of awesome ones continue, and I’m so excited to share all of these books with y’all!

I just can’t believe some of my favorite series are over? Like . . . what? But also, I am still really happy the endings were so great.

So, not to keep you waiting, here are my 6 favorite sequels from 2018!

Kingdom of the Blazing Phoenix by Julie C. Dao

32605122

Kingdom of the Blazing Phoenix isn’t technically a sequel (it can be read as a standalone), but for my purposes, I am 100% considering it to be one.

Because wow this was even better than Forest of a Thousand Lanterns? I really liked Xifeng’s story, but I related a lot more to Jade’s and enjoyed how Dao wove this but also subtly wrapped up Forest of a Thousand Lanterns, even if you didn’t read it.

It was such a great conclusion to this sorta-series and I really wish we were able to get more books from this world in the future, but alas! I will instead look forward to whatever else Dao brings us next!

The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats & Piracy by Mackenzi Lee

The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice & Virtue was good, but I liked The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats & Piracy even more just because Felicity was so awesome and I loved this mini girl gang!

Not only is this full of adventure and swashbuckling pirates and sea monsters, but I loved the character relationships a lot in this book and found Felicity to be a loveable character who still had her flaws and worked on them throughout the book.

The friendships were top notch and Lee even continued to explore Felicity and Monty’s relationship, which I loved more. I just adore this family ahhh!

As She Ascends by Jodi Meadows

35429996

So, not only do we get SO MANY awesome dragons, but we are also blessed with this thing called Mira and how freaking strong she is?

I love Mira so much, and not only is she such an amazing main character who has grown so much even throughout just two books, she’s also just so powerful and inspirational in the way that she perseveres in this novel, despite what people throw at her.

(Also if you’re looking for anxiety + compulsions rep in SFF, this is your jam.)

Plus, the romance just absolutely tears at my heart and I can’t wait for more when book 3 comes next year!

This Cruel Design by Emily Suvada

38316465

Obviously this book makes the list because it is just so badass.

Emily Suvada is amazing at making science fiction that’s gritty and twisty and so hard to put down, and she did not disappoint in writing This Cruel Design!

I loved the science, I loved the twists, and Suvada really pulled out the stops with this sequel! I am fearful of what she’ll throw at us in book 3, because I just want everyone to be safe and happy *sobs*

Definitely pick up this series if you haven’t already! It’s so much actiony fun and a great read for when you want something chock-full with action!

Shadowsong by S. Jae-Jones

30694168

I am so sad to see this series over.

Both Wintersong and Shadowsong were so lush and gorgeous and I honestly cry thinking about how beautiful it is. But also like, I am very excited for that Asian fantasy JJ has cooking, so I’m not opposed to more books?

Anyways, SAD this series is over, and still hoping for those unadulterated scenes 👀👀👀

It’s honestly so good and the exploration of bipolar disorder (also in fantasy!) is awesome and I defintiely recommend this series! So atmospheric wow.

Genesis by Brendan Reichs

35425574

Be right back–still SCREAMING at those plot twists whyyyyy

I mean–I loved reading Nemesis (during Hurricane Irma) last year and the conspiracy was so top notch, and Genesis did not disappoint once again. More twists, more turns, more conspiracies, and more betrayals and I just want Min and Noah to get through it all safe and happy?

But no. Have you seen the cover of Chrysalis? THERE ARE FREAKING BULLET HOLES IN IT, PEOPLE. I die. I need book 3 ASAP because this series is killing me. The cliffhangers . . . why?!

What sequels did you love reading in 2018?
