More than 45 Books, Oh My!: April & May 2018 Book Haul

Y’know, I’ve been putting off this post for a while now because of the big glaring question: “Vicky, isn’t this post just a little bit hypocritical of you?”

Yes and no.

Yes because making large book hauls a standard is generally harmful & continues to perpetuate the American standard of owning physical books. You don’t need to own bunches of books to be an awesome blogger, although it’s cool if you do. Through actions like book hauls, we’re reinforcing the idea that book hauls are something bloggers can and should do.

But also, no because I am morally obligated to thank all the wonderful people who sent me books & swag etc. these past few months. (THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU for all being such wonderful people and continuing to fuel my passion for books! You are all wonderful for sending me so many amazing things, and I really truly appreciate all of this.)

So, what do I do? I have to write this post (of course, there are other ways to thank people, but this is one of the most permanent ways I can do it vs. a transient Instagram story or easily lost tweet, plus I feel obligated to boost the books I receive free), but I’m also contributing to the very same standards I’m trying to combat.

To combat this, I’m sending this out to the world:

If you are a blogger/bookish person who receives less than 25 physical books each month (25 includes books you buy yourself), link me a recent blog post you’d like some love on, an IG post you want comments on, a tweet you want boosted, etc. (as long as it’s not inappropriate etc.)

I’ll keep this open for a couple weeks.

But once again, let it be emphasized. Seriously, you are under no obligation to read this. If you want, you can totally drop your link below and not read anything after this point, I don’t care.

I know how irrationally jealous I personally can get over other people’s book hauls, and so if this is something that’s not great for your mental health, don’t read it. (But jealousy is still a valid feeling so don’t feel bad if you ever do feel jealous!)

Things to remember before you begin:

• You don’t need large book hauls to be an awesome bookish person.
• You don’t need physical books at all to be an awesome bookish person.
• Anyone can be an awesome bookish person.

1. Hooper by Geoff Herbach

Thank you so much to Harper Collins and the Jean Book Nerd blog tour for sending me this finished copy for the blog tour! This is such an awesome novel about a Polish immigrant teen in America trying to improve on his basketball skills.

I had a ton of fun with my blog post on the tour (find it here!) and I definitely recommend you check this out if you like books with themes on friendship, basketball, and family!

2. The Heart Forger by Rin Chupeco (ARC)

Thank you so much to Div Book Bridge for hooking me up with this book and sending me a copy! This is such an awesome program that helps teen reviewers and readers from marginalized groups get their hands on books that help represent them!

I loved reading The Bone Witch and can’t wait to dive into The Heart Forger. This is such a cool series, plus it’s based off of Southeast Asian cultural items, so that’s just another added bonus to this deliciously lush diverse fantasy! Book 1 is the perfect mixture of dark and magical to pull you in, and I can’t wait to dive into book 2.

They’re currently undergoing some changes to the program, but check back @DivBookBridge on Twitter to find out when they open! This is a program exclusively for teens who review, and they do ship internationally!

3. Daughter of the Burning City by Amanda Foody

Thank you so much to Jordyn from Rogue Treasure, one of the latest book boxes for YA book lovers, for sending me #3 & #4 in exchange for their April theme card design! (Seriously, check their box out because there’s so much cool stuff always included inside!)

I am so excited to read Daughter of the Burning City (it’s purple, ok?), especially after I loved Foody’s Ace of Shades so much! I’m really excited to read her debut and all the magical, fantastical adventures this set of characters go on!

4. The Last Namsara by Kristen Ciccarelli

I’m also super excited to dive into The Last Namsara! During Thanksgiving last year, I managed to read around 8 pages at the bookstore, but haven’t been able to pick it up since, so having a hardcopy available is so exciting because now I can really dive into this magical world!

I have high hopes for this fantasy, especially based on what I’ve seen so far. Plus, the black and gold aesthetic is so on point and the second book looks equally gorgeous!

5. Heart of Iron by Ashley Poston

Thank you so much to the YA Lit Discord for hosting this awesome bookstagram challenge! I had so much fun working through the prompts & can’t wait to keep at it for the whole year!

I love working through the YA Lit Discord photo challenges, and I had so much fun in March completing them! They always have such cool prompts, and I hope they revive the program next month! Plus, Heart of Iron is just such an awesome book and I loved reading this sci-fi novel! Ashley Poston is such a cool writer and I can’t wait for the sequel!

6. A Conspiracy of Stars by Olivia A. Cole (Personalized)

Thank you so much to Olivia A. Cole for sending this to me with this really cute t-shirt as well! Olivia is my queen and I just love A Conspiracy of Stars so much! The eARC was so wonderful, and then finding a copy in my January Uppercase was equally fun, and then Olivia sending me a personalized (!) copy in the mail was just the icing on the cake.

I just loved the diversity in this novel plus the really awesome commentary on colonialism as well as just the really exciting plot in general! 7. When the Beat Drops by Anna Hecker (ARC)

I’m a little ways into this ARC and really enjoying the music themes so far! Thanks so much to Eric Smith (you rock!) for sending me this ARC, even if there was a mix up! I’m slowly working my way through and really really enjoying it so far!

If you like a good book with music, friendship, and family themes, I totally recommend you check this debut out! There’s so much to love (plus, Anna is such a sweetheart!).

8. The Star-Touched Queen by Roshani Chokshi

Thank you so much to Esha from Bookmark My Heart for sending me #8 and #9 in exchange for the art print for their monthly bookish swag box! I really loved reading The Star-Touched Queen and just had to get my hands on a copy of this book!

Chokshi is such an amazing writer and I love the luscious quality to her writing, and was so surprised to find out that she’s equally amazing in person (how can someone be so perfect?) and absolutely hilarious! I could listen to her tell crazy stories all day. My queen, Roshani Chokshi.

9. Girls Made of Snow and Glass by Melissa Bashardoust

Plus, Girls Made of Snow and Glass! I loved reading this fantasy debut last year because it’s so icy and wintry but also really queer and has super awesome intersecting timelines! I love the f/f relationship and the atmosphere is such a great one, especially if you’re gearing up for (or, like me, a Floridian, dreaming of) winter!

The way the two timelines in this book intersect is just so awesome, and I 100% recommend you check this out if you like f/f relationships, really cool timeline intersection, wintry atmospheres, and a good dose of some magic! You can read my review here!

10. Brightly Burning by Alexa Donne (ARC)

Thank you so much to HMH Teen for sending this plus a super cute tote bag to me from their newsletter giveaway! I love the HMH Teen newsletter, and was so shook to find the email saying I won the giveaway for Brightly Burning! I had been lusting over this Jane Eyre in space retelling for quite a while, and it was such a pleasant surprise to have this sent to me.

This is such an awesome book and I loved how Donne shaped the plot and all of the science-y parts! Plus, the Jane Eyre basis was thoroughly awesome as well. And the tote bag included (Brightly Burning themed, of course) was so cute and I love taking it places!

11. The Bird and the Blade by Megan Bannen (ARC)

Thank you so much to Megan Bannen for sending me an ARC of her novel, The Bird and the Blade! AHHHHHH THIS IS LIKE THE BEST THING I’VE EVER READ GIVE THIS WOMAN A ROUND OF APPLAUSE.

I just love this book so much? I stan everyone in it? Old goats for the win? Oh my gosh, this book has seriously upped the standard of fantasy. I was absolutely heart-broken after reading (still am, in fact) and I don’t know how to handle myself after reading this book.

I’m so glad for my short memory because hopefully I’ll forget how I’ve been wronged through this book (THAT ENDING) and be able to reread it peacefully and without a sense of dread? Because I love all the characters and I DON’T WANT THEM TO DIE WHYYY

12. Trouble Never Sleeps by Stephanie Tromly

Thank you so much to Penguin for hosting this awesome giveaway! I had no idea I won this when it was dropped off on my doorstep, which made it such a lovely surprise and the least expected item on this list! I am so excited to dive into this trilogy, and it looks like such a fun romp in the woods (not literally) that I could totally get behind!

I like lighthearted, somewhat silly mystery novels and this seems like exactly the perfect book for me! I might not be well acquainted with trouble now, but after reading this, we’ll see…

13. The Queen Underneath by Stacey Filak (Signed ARC)

Thank you so much to Stacey Filak for hosting this incredible giveaway! Besides sending me an ARC of her upcoming fantasy debut, she also included a super gorgeous charm bracelet (although it does fit better as an anklet), an art print of her book cover, a magnet, and left a super sweet note inside the ARC!

If you like some magical mayhem and good at heart but traditionally unsavory characters, I definitely recommend you check this one out! (Appropriate for ages 17+ due to explicit content.)

14. Say You’ll Remember Me by Katie McGarry (Signed)

Thank you so much to Katie McGarry for sending me this lovely package from her Instagram giveaway! I really enjoyed reading Say You’ll Remember Me as it is one of the better contemporary romances I’ve read, and it’s so nice to own a signed hardback now too!

I really enjoyed reading it and actually thought the characters had a lot of chemistry, which is saying something! Even though this leans on the longer side, I gobbled the whole thing up super quickly!  The cover is deliciously glossy and it’s also purple inside and outside, which is like a dream for me. SO MUCH PURPLE YASS.

15. Love Songs & Other Lies by Jessica Pennington (Signed ARC)

Katie was also sweet enough to add on not only an ARC of Jess’ debut, which I really enjoyed reading, but also a ton of Love Songs & Other Lies swag (which was such a cool coincidence because I’m part of Jess’ street team and a swag pack is already on its way to me!)

In the package there was a (all LS&OL themed) button, two guitar picks, a sticker set of different bands, two LS&OL stickers, two signed bookmarks, a drawstring backpack, and a bookplate. I have some of this stuff set aside (I also got more swag from Jess’ street team) for a giveaway, so keep your eyes peeled!

16. Daughter of the Siren Queen by Tricia Levenseller (ARC)

Thank you so much to Iryna Khymych for sending this to me as part of a giveaway! I absolutely adored the first book and can’t wait to read this one! I’m woefully behind because I started the eBook a while back, and never caught up!

I just love this series as it’s such a great MG to YA transition novel! I think it’s suitable for mature MG readers and young YA readers which is what makes this series so great. I struggled a lot with this transition, and finding books that would have been great for younger me to read is something I love doing!

17. What the Woods Keep by Katya de Becerra (ARC)

Thank you so much to Katya and Imprint for sending me an ARC of her upcoming debut to review! I am so pumped for this after hearing about it at the #18debutchat (which you should all join in on, the 18th of every month @8pm EST on Twitter).

It’s dark and delicious and genre-crossing (YASS) with all these twinges of urban fantasy and sci-fi and thriller. It looks like such a fun story and I’m almost getting The Hazel Wood vibes–but darker. I’m so excited to dive in and Katya is absolutely the sweetest ever! I’m saving this one for a special occasion (maybe when AP scores come back–either as consolation or celebration?)

18. Girls of Paper and Fire by Natasha Ngan (ARC)

OH MY GOSH THANK YOU SO MUCH TO Jimmy Patterson and Natasha for sending me an ARC of her upcoming debut! I was so excited to read this one because it’s an Asian fantasy with lesbian girls and royalty and I just–wow.

This one totally lived up to all the expectations and I’m just so shook at how awesome it was to read! I loved all the magical aspects and the f/f romance was SO WELL DONE. I love how atmospheric Ngan’s writing was and was totally sucked into the story and the dangers the characters were going through in the court. I definitely recommend you check this one out!

19-24. Dread Nation by Justina Ireland; The Cage by Megan Shepherd; The Hunt by Megan Shepherd (ARC); Bobby Sky: Boy Band or Die by Joe Shine; Umberland by Wendy Spinale (Paperback); Lights, Camera, Disaster by Erin Dionne

Thank you so much to YA Books Central for sending me this big box of SIX BOOKS (16-21) that I can’t to dive into! It was so much fun participating in the scavenger hunt and I can’t wait to participate again in the next round!

I seriously have no words because I totally did not expect this to arrive! But I’m very excited to dive into all 6 of these books which sound super cool. I’m probably most excited for The Cage because it sounds like a sci-fi romance I could definitely be into & it’s by the author of the upcoming Grim Lovelies.

25. An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir

I had such an awesome used bookstore find when I spotted a hardcover of An Ember in the Ashes with its original cover! I’ve been looking all over for a sale copy of this and I managed to score it in very good condition for only $2.99! (Seriously, what’s better than a sale?)

I own the original A Torch Against the Night cover which is why I wanted to get the original Ember, even though they went through a cover change. One day I hope to buy maybe a box set, or all of the quartet in HC with the new covers. We’ll see.

26. Lies You Never Told Me by Jennifer Donaldson (ARC)

Thank you so much to Bookish First and Penguin Teen for sending me an ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review! This is such a twisty thriller and I was totally on the edge of my seat while reading the whole book!

I  was honestly so surprised by some of the twists, and this book did not disappoint in that aspect! If you’re looking for some real thrills, I totally recommend you check this one out!

27-28. Scythe by Neal Shusterman; Kat and Meg Conquer the World by Anna Priemaza

I scored these at one of my local used bookstores and am sooo happy I found them in such nice condition! I am currently loving Scythe so far, although it is taking me a while (I keep getting distracted and I’m also scared for what’s to come). But the concept is so cool and interesting, that I can’t help but want to read more!

And Kat and Meg Conquer the World I loved reading! When it came out so seeing it on sale at my used bookstore was so cool! It was tucked in a corner but I was so happy to find a copy so I could own this awesome novel. I love all the anxiety & ADHD rep, plus all the geeky fandom stuff in it too! If you like gaming, friendship themes, mental health, or the book Fangirl, I totally recommend you check this one out!

29. Panic by Lauren Oliver (Signed)

Thank you so much to M.K. England for sending this to me! I loved Lauren Oliver’s Replica series, and can’t wait to dive into another one of her books! This one sounds so cool and I can’t wait to read (plus, it’s also signed!) I mean, teens participating in a risky game that’s held as tradition? Sign. Me. Up.

And I cannot wait to read M.K.’s debut, The Disasters! It’s about a pilot kicked out of space academy, so you should definitely keep your eyes peeled! She does tons of really fun stuff on her Instagram (like space arts and crafts) so you should totally follow her!

30. Nothing Happened by Molly Booth

Thank you so much to Molly Booth for hosting a giveaway on Twitter and sending me a finished copy of Nothing Happened! This is such a cool retelling of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing, and I can’t wait to dive in!

The cover gives off serious friendship and diversity vibes, so I’m so excited to read. Plus, summer camp–woohoo! Doesn’t that sound just so cool?

31. Access Restricted by Gregory Scott Katsoulis (ARC)

Thank you so much to Gregory Scott Katsoulis for sending me an ARC of his upcoming novel! I’m loving reading All Rights Reserved, book 1, right now and I can’t wait to finish and start Access Restricted!

This is such a cool dystopian where after you turn 15 years old, every word you say costs money, some words more than others. The concept is honestly jarring, and I can feel myself with my mouth clamped shut as I read. Speth is our unintentionally rebellious main character, and I’m so excited to see where this book and the series goes!

32. The Boneless Mercies by April Genevieve Tucholke (Limited Edition ARC)

Thank you so much to Hashtag Read for hosting this awesome giveaway for a copy of a limited edition ARC of The Boneless Mercies! This is absolutely one of the most gorgeous things I’ve ever seen and I am adoring reading so far.

I’m a little over 100 pages in, and a genderbent Beowulf retelling is just so kick ass. Seriously. I just love this whole group of female assassins (and their one male tagalong) as they chase down a chilling monster that is terrorizing people, their one chance at leaving the duties of being a Boneless Mercy and killing the sick and the old mercifully (because men will not do their terrible work). SO AWESOME WOW.

33. The Arsonist by Stephanie Oakes (ARC)

Thank you so much to the LitJoy Crate for hosting this giveaway and sending me an ARC of The Arsonist! Shipping has been a bitch but I’m so glad this book finally made its way to me! I can’t wait to read it because it sounds so amazing and thrilling!

A murder mystery with teens uncovering clues sounds so cool, and one of the main characters has epilepsy too! This sounds like such an interesting novel and I’m really excited to dive on in!

34. Anger Is a Gift by Mark Oshiro (ARC)

I’ve loved being a part of Jess’ street team and hope I’ve done Love Songs & Other Lies justice!

I’m so excited to read Mark Oshiro’s Anger Is A Gift because it fits the bill of socially important novels, like The Hate U Give and Dear Martin and Tyler Johnson Was Here, all of which I’ve loved or are excited to read. I’m really excited to read the powerful novel Oshiro is bringing to the table.

 35. The Accidental Bad Girl by Maxine Kaplan

Thank you so much to Julia Lynn Rubin (author of Burro Hills) for hosting this awesome preorder giveaway! I am so excited to read The Accidental Bad Girl, especially because it’s about a girl who’s been framed.

I love those mysteries when the character has their own future on the line, not just searching for answers, so I’m very very excited to dive into this one! Private schools are so fun to read about and I’m hella pumped!

36-40. Alex, Approximately by Jenn Bennett; The Reader by Traci Chee; Wink Poppy Midnight by April Genevieve Tucholke; Highly Illogical Behavior by John Corey Whaley; The Serpent King by Jeff Zentner

This is what happens when you find a new bargain bookstore. You end up with five hardcovers for $15. At this rate, I’m going to have to start a book buying ban.

But seriously, how could I resist? 5 really amazing books that I loved/can’t wait to read–all for $15?  *swoons* Alex, Approximately was such an awesome contemporary romance read, and I’m so excited for The Reader (the cover reveal for The Storyteller was so gorgeous!), I’ve heard great things about Wink Poppy Midnight, plus the cover is by an illustrator I deeply admire, Highly Illogical Behavior just sounds so good, and everybody raves about The Serpent King.

Seriously–how can I resist?

41. When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon

I bought this from Barnes and Noble on a whim (they have it in the bargain priced section) because I loved reading WDMR and there was a chance I could meet Sandhya at Book Con! But I didn’t end up bringing it (or meeting Sandhya, for that matter) which was rather unfortunate.

But it doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy Sandhya’s really awesome story! I love this diverse romcom contemporary and it’s such a fun and relaxing read for me. Dimple and Rishi are just so adorable and I love them together.

42. The Window by Amelia Brunskill

Thank you so much to the Fantastic Flying Book Club for hosting this awesome giveaway and blog tour! And thank you to Delacorte Press for sending the book.

I’m not usually a big fan of these types of mysteries when there’s not too much investment in the story, but wow The Window was a stunner. I loved reading the narrating twin’s voice because she’s definitely an introvert, but her voice managed to match so well. I was in awe at how well Brunskill shaped this and really enjoyed the whole story–definitely recommend!

43. One of Us Is Lying by Karen McManus (UK Paperback)

Thank you so much to Henn/Lydia @ Literary Lydia / hennwick for hosting this awesome giveaway & sending me this book! Not only is she a super awesome person and a great friend (we met online in the most awkward of manners ever fml), but her bookstagram is sooo on point and you will love her graphics!

I really enjoyed reading One of Us Is Lying and this was such an awesome and gripping mystery! I definitely did not call the ending (this was the first mystery book I’ve read in a long time), and I couldn’t resist the UK paperback from it’s shiny red foil and red sprayed pages! What a cool cover!

44. Tell Me No Lies by Adele Griffin (ARC)

Thank you so much to the Fantastic Flying Book Club and Algonquin Young Readers for sending me an advance readers copy of Tell Me No Lies for the blog tour! I really enjoyed this coming-of-age high school novel about a girl with epilepsy living in the 80s. It’s nice to see a book from that time period.

I think it was really cool to see how similar teens lived in the 80s and now, except for the small difference of things going on (Walkmans, AIDs crisis, etc.). And this book did through a few curveballs at us, which I definitely didn’t mind.

45. Not a Drop to Drink by Mindy McGinnis

I stopped by my local used bookstore (again) and found this for sale! ($2.99 wow the prices are so great here.) It’s in such good condition (and is a first edition!) and I totally adore all of McGinnis’ work, so I’m really excited to own this.

I’ve only got a couple more of McGinnis’ books left to read (This Darkness Mine, Not a Drop to Drink series, Given to the Earth) and I don’t want to rush it too hastily! I’m going to save this one for a rainy day when I’m feeling down, because I know I can count on McGinnis to pull me out of a slump!

46. Always Never Yours by Austin Siegemund-Broka & Emily Wibberly (May)

Thank you so much to Tara Tsai for hosting this amazing giveaway! I loved reading this awesome book by her mentors in the Author Mentor Match!

Seriously, this is such a fun romantic contemporary novel and the MMC was so swoonworthy! I had a lot of fun reading about Megan and her romance troubles, and this was such an enjoyable contemporary romance debut feat. theater and Romeo and Juliet and all sorts of fun things!

47. The Wicked Deep by Shea Ernshaw

This was my early birthday present to myself splurge of the month. I haven’t bought a book full price since December and I did still use a coupon on this *flips hair* But seriously, this was the very last copy of the deluxe first edition left at my Barnes and Noble and I couldn’t pass it by!

I love the stars and moon inside–so gorgeous–and this was such a fabulous book to read. Witches and all sorts of sorcery were thrilling, and there are quite a few twists in this book you might not expect! I loved reading–you can find my review here!

48. Wavehouse by Alice Kaltman

Thank you so much to Paula Stokes for sending me a copy of Alice Kaltman’s Wavehouse! Seriously, this sounds so cool! It’s about a one of the best surfers in the region who secretly wants to be an artist, despite the really huge surf culture of the area.

This sounds like something almost all readers can relate to–being stuck in a box you’re expected to stay in despite not wanting to be there. I’m really excited to read Anna’s story! Plus, Paula was so sweet to throw in a bookmark for her novel This Is How It Happened.

49. If Birds Fly Back by Carlie Sorosiak (Paperback)

Thank you so much to Carlie Sorosiak for sending me a paperback of her debut, If Birds Fly Back! I can’t wait to read this contemporary because it sounds like a contemporary right up my alley.

I’ve been really craving this genre lately, so it was a really great surprise to win this giveaway! Reading two timelines that are connected yet the characters never meet sounds really cool, and I can’t wait to dive into Carlie’s debut! Plus, she has Wild Blue Wonder coming out later this month which you should definitely check out!

This Mortal Coil by Emily Suvada Bookmark & Bookplate

Huge thanks to Emily Suvada for hosting this awesome giveaway and mailing me such a pretty bookplate and book mark for This Mortal Coil. I attached it in my book and have all the good feels about it (there’s a little DNA coil on the bookplate which is so cute!)

I love love LOVED reading This Mortal Coil and absolutely cannot wait to read This Cruel Design. Like seriously, how can a book be that good? I am awed by how believable the science was, how gripping the action was, and how twisty the plot ended up being! The moment you think it’s the climatic twist is ruined because another climatic twist comes along and blows your mind once again. I mean–why? how? who is that amazing?

Rebound by Kwame Alexander Poster

Thank you so much to HMH Kids for sending me this gorgeous, glossy poster for Kwame Alexander’s latest MG release in verse, Rebound! It’s so pretty and shiny–I love looking at it!

I’m excited to read Rebound because I really love Alexander’s verse novels, such as Solo, and can’t wait to see where he takes this MG about basketball!

The Devil’s Thief by Lisa Maxwell Postcard

Thank you so much to M.K. England for hosting that awesome subscribers giveaway! I can’t wait to read The Disasters and the sticker and bookmark look SO GORGEOUS! I’m actually currently giving the duplicate set away in my giveaway (find it here) so you can win a copy of your own!

But the sticker from The Disasters is soo cute, and I love having another book-specific bookmark to add to my collection! I now have 14 books specific bookmarks, which is very, very cool! So much amazing swag has passed my way these last few months!
